Woman, 25, says HR of Indian company asked her about marriage plans. Internet debates

An Indian marketing specialist based in the UK has sparked a debate on social media after sharing an experience with a human resources representative of an Indian company.
In her viral post, Janhvi Jain claimed that the HR representative questioned her age and then asked if she was planning to get married soon after she mentioned being 25.
“An HR representative of an Indian company asked me how old I am, and when I said 25, they immediately followed up with, ‘Are you planning to marry soon?’ Is this seriously still happening?” she wrote on X.
The post went viral with over one lakh views, prompting users to share their thoughts and opinions, with many flagging concerns about such workplace practices.
“Yes it is happening. They feel marriage will distract us,” a comment read. Another user said, “Pretty common these days”, while some users asked Jain to name the company and “shame” them.
Another comment read: “They want working machines not humans with lives.”
However, several others shared their experiences, explaining the reason behind why such a question was probably asked by the HR.
“I was asked the same thing when I was around 26, in the technical round. Still got an offer. When I eventually did marry, I was approved almost 20 days of leaves. Sometimes it isn’t malice it’s just that the stakeholder needs to plan their projects and hires,” a user said.
